We grow confident mathematical thinkers through fluency, strategy, and meaningful learning.

Wagaman Primary School implements the Meaningful Maths approach, drawing on both the New Zealand mathematics framework and the Australian Curriculum. Through the explicit teaching of strategy, we build strong foundations in number knowledge and fluency, ensuring students develop the automaticity needed to successfully engage in higher-level mathematical thinking.
Our approach emphasises mathematical fluency first, followed by problem solving and collaborative exploration. Once strategies are secure, students are encouraged to investigate multiple approaches, apply their knowledge to real-world contexts and communicate their mathematical reasoning.
By combining the NZ framework’s strengths in strategic thinking with the Australian Curriculum’s focus on modelling and practical application, we ensure students develop deep understanding as well as confidence and accuracy. This balanced approach prepares students for future learning and enables them to tackle mathematical challenges with skill and flexibility.
